Dr. T. P. Lahane

MS (Ophthalmology) | Founder & Director, Raghunath Netralaya Cataract, Cornea, Glaucoma & Paediatric Ophthalmology

Dr. Tatyarao Pundlikrao Lahane is the founder and driving vision behind Raghunath Netralaya, and one of India's most respected names in ophthalmology. With over three decades of dedicated service to eye care, he has personally performed more than 1,65,000 surgeries. He has organised and led over 350 surgical cataract camps, bringing sight-restoring care to thousands of patients across Maharashtra who may otherwise never have accessed it.

Dr. Lahane is widely credited with pioneering Phacoemulsification cataract surgery within Maharashtra's government hospital system, a shift that brought a modern, minimally invasive surgical standard into public healthcare at scale. Beyond his own surgical practice, he has trained and mentored more than 150 ophthalmologists from across the country, shaping a generation of surgeons. He continues to be an invited speaker at national and international ophthalmology conferences.

His institutional leadership is equally distinguished. He served as Dean of the Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, from 2010 to 2017, and later as Director of Medical Education and Research for the State of Maharashtra (2019–2021). During the COVID-19 pandemic, he took on the role of Nodal Officer for Maharashtra State (2020–2021), helping steer the state's medical education institutions through the crisis.

In recognition of his contribution to eye care and public health, Dr. Lahane was conferred the Padma Shri — one of India's highest civilian honours — by the Hon'ble President of India in 2008. At Raghunath Netralaya, he continues to lead a team he has built around his own philosophy: that comprehensive, compassionate eye care should be accessible under one roof, delivered with both clinical excellence and humility.
